A forthcoming Windows 10 update will address one of the critical operating system issues that threatens to damage SSDs.
The first problems appeared in Windows 10 Version 2004 shipped in May after which users reported that disk optimization tools went out of control. These tools performed optimizations more often than they should, directly affecting the lifespan of the SSD.
It is about defragmenting disks. During this process the contents are reorganized so that the data is accessed faster. Defragmenting a heavily fragmented disk can bring significant performance improvements, but the optimization process overloads the disk as well.
Windows 10 remembers the last time the disk was defragmented so as not to repeat the process faster than it should by damaging the SSD. In the case of SSD experts believe this process is completely unnecessary while others say it should be done at least once a month.
A problem in Windows 10 Version 2004 in the Optimize Drives tool, caused the defragmentation to happen as soon as the computer turned on. This means that the SSD was defragmented 30 times more than required Microsoft acknowledged the problem identified in June and sent an update but only to experimental versions of Windows 10 in the Insider program.
